Giant Step Presents Melting Pot Global+ Turntables on the Hudson

Location: New York City Hudson Hotel 356 West 58 Street, New York, NY
Damage: Free with RSVP for placement on guestlist. RSVP limited to one person per email.

It's that time of year again for the annual Giant Step holiday party, and we all deserve to celebrate. This year we are delighted to have our good friends Turntables on the Hudson and Melting Pot Global come together to make sure the vibe is really right!

Since 1998, Turntables on the Hudson has consisted primarily of DJs Nickodemus & Mariano + percussionists Nappy G and Christian Rogers. Alongside a big family of musicians and DJs, hand picked venues & dancing party people, they have brought the vibe to the Frying Pan and the Pier, the Chelsea Piers, the Brooklyn Loft, Opaline, Shelter, Cielo, Element, SOB's, Spiegelworld, and dance floors across the U.S., Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Melting Pot Global is a collective dedicated to bringing soulful dance music to the masses through the arts. It's a weekly event for deep & soulful house headz that LOVE 2 dance; featuring resident DJs Kervyn Mark and Kamala at the decks. It began in New York seven years ago and its buzz of it being a must-go-to event with its hodge-podge of guest DJs and performers in venues such as its present home, Water Taxi Beach/South Street Seaport.

As New York City's premier Monday night event for the last two years, the Hudson has consistently seen a curated roster of DJ legends and pioneering artists as wide-ranging as Louie Vega, Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzanova, Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell and Danny Krivit, playing styles from soulful house, Latin, hip hop, jazz, funk and more. Mark your calendars for quality music and dancing at Hudson.

Where: St. John’s Bread & Life, 795 Lexington Avenue btw Patchen Ave & Malcolm X Blvd, Brooklyn

Meetup Details: It's time to give back! We are all so blessed and at this time of the year, people who are in need feel it more than ever. This is your opportunity to give back with a group of people who have the same goals as you. We will meet at the soup kitchen, wrap gifts, serve food and then afterward go eat lunch ourselves and have a good time.

Please provide your first name and last name when you rsvp. There's a volunteer form that I have to fill out and return.

*Please rsvp with intergrity. If you rsvp yes, please show up. Otherwise, please change your rsvp to no.*
New Yorkers are facing unprecedented hardships this holiday season. Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back by donating your time and service to struggling NYC families. Please join Culturally Savvy People as we lend a helpful hand at St.John’s Bread and Life in Bedford-Stuyvesant, BK. Volunteer duties will consist of gift-wrapping Christmas presents for homeless children or helping out in the shelter’s food pantry.

Blurb about St. John’s Bread and Life per a Yelp reviewer:
The soup kitchen for the 21st century! Newly renovated, three floors state-of-the-art facility! In fact, calling them a soup kitchen does not do them justice. St. John's Bread and Life is the largest emergency food provider in Brooklyn, feeding 1,000 people a day.

About Metrazur...

Métrazur, named for a commuter train that once ran along the Cote d'Azur en route to Monaco, is located in the gloriously revitalized Grand Central Terminal. Sitting on the East Balcony, Métrazur diners overlook the 80,000 square foot Main Concourse under the famous "night sky" ceiling, and astronomical mural of gold leaf on cerulean blue oil, portraying the Mediterranean sky with October to March zodiac.

Spread over two dining areas bisected by a grand marble staircase modeled after the Paris Opera House, Métrazur features an open stainless kitchen where Chef de Cuisine Stefan Bahr adds a Mediterranean touch to Palmer's signature style with dishes like Scallops BLT with Tomato Carpaccio, and Sweet Corn Risotto. Food and wine pairings shine as about half of the wine anthology is offered by the glass. Equipped with high speed wireless service, one of New York's great landmarks is now a meeting and eating place.

Hudson Hot Hotel w/famous DJ Spinna!(Spike Lee)

When: Monday November 16 6:30 pm
Where:Hudson Hotel
356 W 58th St
New York, NY 10019
212-564-6000
Damage: Free with RSVP. You MUST RSVP with giant step. See link below

http://www.giantstep.net/events/1202

I'm soo darn excited about DJ Spinna playing @ the Hudson Hotel!!!!

*DJ Spinna rocked the hot MJ remixes @ this summer's HUGE "Spike Lee celebrates Micheal Jackson" party in Prospect Park!

*His weekly Santo Funhouse parties in Soho (spinnin' old school hip hop -Wu Tang, Nas, Mos Def, Talib Kweli) along w/ soul classics "re-mixed")

*His annual world famous Stevie Wonder "remix" parties(now in Atlanta and LA)

*His annual 4th of July parties @ his backyard in Fort Greene....I'll just stop right there. :-)

Umm yeah...I'm a big fan!:) I can definitely co-sign on this event! And... if you never experience dancin' up a storm inside The Hudson Hotel's midtown luxurious "white room" w/ the [i]glowing dance floors (think MJ's "Billy Jean's" video) You're truly missing something special!

I advise you to rsvp fast - It will be sold out!

A cornerstone of Hip-Hop's late 90's indie-uprise, DJ Spinna made much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background of his group The Jigmastas (having released an impressive slew of 12" singles on his then self-run label Beyond Real during this time) as well as providing the canvas for an array of that era’s lyrical giants. As an emcee in New York City, if you didn’t have a Spinna production under your belt, well, you just hadn’t accomplished all there was to accomplish. Everyone from Mos Def, Talib Kweli to Pharaohe Monch boasted Spinna beats to prove their worth to the scene. At the height of indie-kingpin Rawkus Records heyday, Spinna was in demand, also churning out timeless classics of the era from the likes of J-Live, Mr. Complex and The Polyrhythm Addicts (his all-too-brief collabo-group with Apani B., Shaabam Sadeeq and Complex).

As New York City's premier Monday night event for the last two years, the Hudson has consistently seen a curated roster of DJ legends and pioneering artists as wide-ranging as Louie Vega, Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzanova, Bobbito and Danny Krivit, playing styles from soulful house, Latin, hip hop, jazz, funk and more. Mark your calendars for quality music and dancing at Hudson.

Damage: Admission is free with RSVP until 10pm

Come join us afterwork on Friday November 13th, for the Afterwork Dinner, Drinks @ Dancing Meetup at Fashion 40 in the heart of Midtown!

Come enjoy half priced drinks from 6pm-7pm, while DJ Kaos spins the latest and we mingle and dance in our VIP section on the 2nd floor!

Note, the Meetup starts at 6pm, but if you are in the area earlier, you can drink downstairs beginning at 5pm for the same 2 for 1 drink specials until we set up at 6pm upstairs!

For those who didn't make it there for the Holiday Events or past afterwork Meetups, Fashion 40 is a very cool lounge, laid back music in the beginning, before the DJ starts playing music to get you on your feet! The service is very good, and there is a full menu as well, in case you are hungry between conversations with the group and dancing!

We will have the entire upstairs section of the venue for the Meetup. Just tell the doorman that you are there for the Meetup on the Black/Latino Meetup list.

And we will have at least 1 or 2 dedicated servers taking our drink orders as well, so no need to go downstairs to the bar and wait on line. Just relax and vibe with your fellow Meetup members upstairs in VIP!

Also, if you plan on attending, I recommend that you arrive EARLY at the start of the event. Our VIP section will fill up VERY quickly, and once we reach capacity, I cannot guarantee that you will be able to gain access to the area upstairs.

Additionally, if you RSVP YES and cannot attend, please be sure to change your RSVP by 12 noon the day of the Meetup to give another group member the chance to attend. If you RSVP through me and don't show up, please note your future RSVP's will not be given priority in future events.

As always. this meetup event is definitely more geared toward those members that need to unwind and have a great time, while still mingling with fellow urban professionals.
Feel free to invite a co-worker, friend or potential business client along to the social as well, and be sure to RSVP.

Classy and decadent, Touch is unrivaled in the New York scene. Uniquely designed, the venue boasts over 15,000 square feet of dance space and chic lounges. A booming sound system coupled with extraordinary service raises above all expectations.

INFO ABOUT THE MOVIE
In the movie School Daze, Spike Lee staged a dance number in which two bands of African-American college students debated the merits of "Straight and Nappy" hair in song, and now comedian Chris Rock and filmmaker Jeff Stilson have extended the conversation to a full-length film in this witty documentary with serious undertones. Rock says he was inspired to make the film when his young daughter asked him, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" and he and Stilson examine Black America's obsession with their hair as they visit the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show, an annual trade show for the African-American hair care industry which includes fierce competitions among stylists from around the country and demonstrations of new hair products and techniques. Along the way, Rock also talks to a number of African-American luminaries about their hair issues (including Maya Angelou, The Rev. Al Sharpton, Nia Long, Raven Symone, Ice-T and Paul Mooney), researches the dangers of many common hair straightening treatments, reveals the surprising expense of regular hair "relaxing" and weaves, and ponders what the pursuit of straight hair says about African-American cultural identity. Good Hair received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
