Through The Night Play

Through the Night is a play that embodies the stories of six black men ages ten to sixty who experience an unexpected epiphany on the same evening that changes their lives forever. Daniel combines a thrilling blend of humor, poetry, music and drama in this extraordinary theatre experience. The play is supported by a remarkable group of “Artistic Ambassadors” who all believe in Daniel including Bill Cosby, Ruby Dee, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Thelma Golden, LaTonya Richardson Jackson, Hill Harper, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Phylicia Rashad, Ben Vereen, Pauletta Washington and Malik Yoba. The Urban League of NYC will be hosting their own tailgate party at the Annual Football Classic this year @ the New Giants Stadium!!!

A self-confessed jazz junkie from Philadelphia, PA, Bilal started out by singing in small clubs until he began training in jazz and big-band arrangements at the Mannes Music Conservatory in New York. Late 2009, Bilal announced his official second album will be released Summer 2010 via Los Angeles based label Plug Research Music. The new music promises to be progressive while still having its roots placed firmly in the jazz traditions that originally inspired Bilal's music. As you all know Haiti was rocked by an earthquake of 7.0 in magnitude on January 12th leaving the city of Port-au-Prince in shambles. Our prayers goes out to the Haitian community. We will be collecting donations of dry goods at this event to help the Haitian earthquake victims. Please donate as little or a much as you can. The items will be given to The Haitian Consulate of New York to benefit the victims.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION:

**THIS IS A PARTICIPATORY EVENT. DO NOT SHOW UP UNLESS YOU PLAN TO TAKE YOUR PANTS OFF.**

Bring: A backpack and a metro card. Do not bring: A camera (we?ll have several photographers on hand).

After Party: For those over 21, there will be an official "No Pants" After Party at Sidebar, 15th Street @ Irving Place. First drink is free if you arrive without pants.

Okay, please know that generally, I am only a little crazy, but I had to post this. I just had to. Think about it: How often do you get to drop your pants in New York City and not go to jail? This is a must do!

This event is now a national phenomenon! In 2009, over 1200 pantsless people rode subways and ran amock all over NYC, over 2000 people in 10 rides in 3 countries!

The Annual No Pants Subway Ride is organized by Improv Everywhere, an improv group, based here in New York City. Since 2001, they have executed over 80 "missions" causing scenes of chaos and joy in public places across the country. This one is no exception and is guaranteed to be a blast!

Here's the deal: We will meet about two blocks from the location designated by the organizers. Our meeting place will be decided once its published by Improv Everywhere. We will then join the crowd and get semi-, partially-, totally, innocently naked! This is going to be so much fun!

And, just so you don't think I am just trying to lure you into Manhattan to get you to drop your trousers, feel free to check out details from last year's event.

And for the record: I know it will be January. I know it will be cold. This event will take place Rain, Snow, Sleet or Shine! But, think of it this way: This will be pure, unadulterated, NYC fun!

In the movie School Daze, Spike Lee staged a dance number in which two bands of African-American college students debated the merits of "Straight and Nappy" hair in song, and now comedian Chris Rock and filmmaker Jeff Stilson have extended the conversation to a full-length film in this witty documentary with serious undertones. Rock says he was inspired to make the film when his young daughter asked him, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" and he and Stilson examine Black America's obsession with their hair as they visit the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show, an annual trade show for the African-American hair care industry which includes fierce competitions among stylists from around the country and demonstrations of new hair products and techniques. Along the way, Rock also talks to a number of African-American luminaries about their hair issues (including Maya Angelou, The Rev. Al Sharpton, Nia Long, Raven Symone, Ice-T and Paul Mooney), researches the dangers of many common hair straightening treatments, reveals the surprising expense of regular hair "relaxing" and weaves, and ponders what the pursuit of straight hair says about African-American cultural identity. This is an all- day event, so you can bring your families. Early in the day, you will see family oriented events and you will be able to find out about community organizations, such as the Beacon program, which runs afterschool programs; and Black Girls Rock, which is a mentoring program. Then in the afternoon, the concert series begins at 4pm.

[b]Pianist/singer/songwriter, Eliane Elias is known for her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style which blends her Brazilian roots, her sensuous, alluring voice with her impressive instrumental jazz, classical and compositional skills. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Eliane Elias’ musical talents began to show at an early age. She started studying piano at age seven and at age twelve was transcribing solos from the great jazz masters. By the time she was fifteen she was teaching piano and improvisation at one of Brazil’ s most prestigious schools of music. Her performing career began in Brazil at age seventeen, working with Brazilian singer/songwriter Toquinho and the great poet Vinicius de Moraes who was also Antonio Carlos Jobim’s co-writer/lyricist. In 1981 she headed for New York and in 1982 landed a spot in the acclaimed group Steps Ahead.

In 1988 she was voted Best New Talent by the jazz critics poll of JAZZIZ magazine.

Together with Herbie Hancock in their duet, she was nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Jazz Solo Performance” category for her 1995 release, “Solos and Duets” .This recording was hailed by Musician Magazine as “a landmark in piano duo history.”

Ms. Elias’ “AROUND THE CITY” cd was released on RCA Victor in August 2006 . It merges bits of Bossa Nova, with shades of pop, jazz, latin, and rock’n roll. AROUND THE CITY features Ms. Elias’ vocals and songwriting in collaborations with producers Andres Levin and Lester Mendez as well as fresh takes on pop classics such as Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va” and Bob Marley’s “Jammin”. Her song “Running” was featured on the ABC series “brothers and Sisters”. Around the City won “Best Vocal Album of the Year”and “Gold Disc” 2006 awards in Japan. It reached #1 on the World Music Charts USA and debuted on the French Jazz Charts as #1.

As a guest artist she has appeared on performances and recordings with Joe Henderson, James Taylor, Michael Franks, Mingus Dynasty, Andy Summers, the Grammy winning Brecker Bros’. Out of the Loop, Earl Klugh, Toots Thielemans Brazil Project , Ivan Lins, Denyce Graves, Steps Ahead, Calle 54, and Marc Johnson’s “Shades of Jade” on ECM Records, an instrumental recording she co-produced and contributed many of her own original compositions. “Shades of Jade” received the Danish Music Award as Best Foreign Release in March 2006.

Ms.Elias was featured in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s televised Second Annual “Celebration of America’s Music” at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, four times on Marion McPartland’s NPR ‘Piano Jazz”; the JVC Festival with Sting, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Caetano Veloso at Lincoln Center in New York, the televised Piano Grand, a Gala celebration for the 300th Anniversary of the piano in Washington DC. hosted by Billy Joel, and the BBC Jazz Orchestra to name a few.

Eliane’s new cd Bossa Nova Stories was released this past summer in Japan and Europe. Bossa Nova Stories debuted at #1 on the French Charts and remained #1 for three consecutive weeks. It’s was also the #1 Best Selling Jazz Vocal Album in Japan, May-June 2008 (Swing Journal). This is Eliane’s second release within one year. Bossa Nova Stories was preceeded by “Something for You, Eliane Elias Sings and Plays Bill Evans”. Bossa Nova Stories is a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Bossa Nova and features Eliane’s vocals accompanied by a stellar rhythm section and orchestra. Eliane performs some of the great Bossa Nova classics and songs from the American songbook.
